The sound of horseshoes awakened my soul from the depths of distant contemplation. Felicity perked her ears forward as we trotted down the woodland path. My eyes were focused on the forest trail that continued to lead us in the direction of the old village. A series of lovely memories floated through my nostalgic mind.

The little red fox did not struggle to keep pace with the graceful strides of the horses. He did not pause to acknowledge the small group of droplet faeries that wandered beside the edge of the trail. A miniature village of flower houses peeked out from the shelter of the dark hedges. The conversations of the tiny creatures were nothing more than whispers to our ears.

The branches of the white birch trees reached out to the passing figure of Juniper Stone. The wild-haired girl was not the master of nature, but she had befriended the forces of her Gift. Her spirit was rooted in the deep earth. There was much to learn from the girl who survived in the darkness of the woods.

Several hours passed before we reached the edge of Willowcrest village. The sounds of nature were abandoned as the forest path transformed into a cobblestone road. The bright paint of the storefront allowed my chestnut mare to throw a second glance. The faint melody of a wooden flute touched the surface of my imagination.

“We must travel through the center of Willowcrest,” said Killian. “The people of Aisling will marvel at your presence in the quiet village; therefore, I must beg that you do not create any sort of curious distraction.”

“Our Gifts are no more curious than those of any person in the realm of Aisling,” replied Ariadne.

“I was referring to your personalities,” retorted Killian. “You must understand your Gifts are far more extraordinary than you will ever know. There are countless people who admire your courage and accomplishments. It is foolish to believe you are insignificant.”
